Bharatiya Janata Party MP Bansuri Swaraj addressed the media in New Delhi on Sunday to question the silence of Congress leadership regarding sexual harassment allegations involving Congress Lok Sabha MP and former Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. Swaraj stated that the revelations involving the academic institution are bone-chilling and accused top opposition brass of double standards regarding women's safety.
Addressing reporters at the party headquarters, Swaraj highlighted allegations made by 11 JNU students concerning sexually suggestive remarks during vivas and inappropriate advances at an on-campus residence. She questioned the silence of senior Congress figures including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi over the complaints that led to an internal committee inquiry under the POSH Act and subsequent job termination from JNU.
Swaraj further criticized the Congress party's political messaging, stating that slogans regarding women empowerment and safety ring hollow in light of the silence surrounding the case. She argued that the party leadership has failed to address the serious nature of the accusations brought forward by the students against a sitting parliamentarian belonging to their political formation.
The press conference follows formal complaints lodged by the students detailing misconduct during academic evaluations and campus interactions. The internal committee proceedings and subsequent administrative actions at Jawaharlal Nehru University formed the core of the disclosures presented during the media briefing in the national capital.
