Unexpected heavy rainfall has triggered severe waterlogging at the Patiala grain market in Punjab, leaving vast quantities of harvested paddy crops submerged and heavily damaged. The downpour struck the facility, catching farmers and traders unawares as water accumulated rapidly across the trading floors on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The sudden deluge has left agricultural produce floating in stagnant pools, sparking immense distress among growers who had brought their yield to the mandi for sale.

Local farmers at the scene voiced deep frustration over the lack of adequate drainage infrastructure and government support during the crisis. Harjit Singh Cheema stated that more than half of the seasonal crop had already arrived at the market, estimating total losses to be nearly 100 percent for the stored jute bags and loose grain alike. He noted that the heavy inundation has ruined the harvested yield completely, leaving cultivators staring at devastating financial setbacks.

Traders operating within the facility echoed similar concerns regarding the administrative shortcomings in managing the sudden weather emergency. Harvested paddy lay scattered across the waterlogged New Grain Market as affected stakeholders documented the destruction of their produce. The incident has drawn immediate attention to the persistent vulnerability of regional agricultural mandis during unexpected weather events.
