Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has publicly criticized the detention of student protesters in Delhi, raising serious questions regarding the state of democratic norms and public safety measures. Addressing the developments, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that internet services were shut down, metro stations were closed, and demonstrators were systematically detained.
The Chief Minister noted that protest leaders who were leading the demonstrations and stepping forward were directly placed under arrest by authorities. He pointed out that these restrictive measures reflect poorly on the administration's handling of peaceful expressions of concern from student groups.
The criticism comes amidst heightened security deployments and widespread restrictions implemented across the national capital during demonstrations. Local authorities and police forces maintained strict cordons, leading to significant disruptions in daily commuter transit and communication networks across the affected areas.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann urged the government to directly address the grievances raised by the student protesters rather than resorting to detentions and shutdowns. He emphasized that democratic institutions must remain open to dialogue and accountable to the citizens they serve.
